Diamond Buying Expertise
Our expert diamond buyers have over 200 years of combined experience when it comes to buying diamonds. Ensuring that only the finest quality diamonds are selected.
We encourage our customers to follow the industry standard '4Cs' for assessing diamond quality. Cut, colour, clarity and carat weight are the key factors that determine the quality and price of diamonds. When buying, we carefully consider these factors and more to ensure that your diamond piece will truly stand out.
Our diamond experts at McDowells are dedicated to providing you with the knowledge and guidance in selecting your perfect diamond.
The Four C's
The cut refers to the angles and proportions of a diamond, and also its shape—round, square, pear, or heart for example. The cut is the first part of the cert that you should look at because a badly cut stone will leak light from underneath.
The Clarity refers to the presence of inclusions in a diamond. Inclusions are natural identifying characteristics such as minerals or fractures, which occur while diamonds are formed in the earth.
Diamonds range on a scale from D to Z with D being the highest colour possible. As diamonds move down the scale from D to Z there is more of a yellow colour present.
Carat is the measurement of the weight of a diamond. One carat weighs 0.2 grams and is split up into 100 points, for example 90points is equal to 0.9 carats which is 0.18grams.
YOUR PERSONAL STYLE
There is a selection of diamond shapes, from rounded cushion, oval and pear cuts to the square princess cut and softer emerald and radiant cuts. Round brilliant is the most popular because the circular shape tends to the most lively sparkle on the hand.
Caring for your Jewellery
Gold Jewellery should be kept away from harsh chemicals such as cleaning fluids. White gold, over time the rhodium plating may wear off. Re plating is a simple process that can be carried out to restore your jewellery’s shine and whiteness.
Diamonds can get smudged, soiled and dusty. Lotions and soaps–even the natural oils from your skin will create a film on diamonds, which will reduce their brilliance.
For a professional jewellery cleaning McDowells service department can take care of your precious jewellery given their full care and attention.
